Ada W. Smith, GW #9
Ada Smith was born 24 March 1876 in Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County, Pa. to Jacob L. and Catharine (White) Smith. Ada was licensed as an evangelist in 1896. In 1900 she is working as a Gospel Worker in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pa. with Louisa Musselman, Emma Geisinger, and Mary Snyder. Perhaps their efforts led to the formation of the Sunbury Mennonite Brethren in Christ church in 1907. By 1910 Ada was in Cleveland, Ohio, with the Gospel Workers there. She is still there in 1920 and 1930. She does not appear on the list in Cleveland in 1940. Instead, there is an Ada W. Smith in Russell town, Hampden County, Massachusetts, working as a housekeeper for an elderly couple, John and Sara Dozier. Is this the same Ada W. Smith? If so, how or why did she go to Massachusetts? Ada’s sister Elva Read lived in Vermont with her family. Perhaps that is how Ada got to New England? When Ada’s sister Elva died in 1956, Ada is listed among the survivors and that she is living in Warminster, Pa. Ada died on 15 March 1961 at Christ’s Home in Warminster, Pa. On her death certificate, her usual occupation is listed as practical nurse. Ada is buried in the cemetery of Christ’s home.
