Bertha M. Miller, GW #97
Bertha was born on 31 March 1896 to Charles and Mary (Haines) Miller of Shamokin, Pa. Bertha was the first of at least twelve children born to her parents. By 1920 she had joined the Gospel Worker Society with her sister Pearl. Bertha does not appear on the list of Gospel Workers on either the 1930 or 1940 census. I can’t find her elsewhere either. In 1954 she joined her sister Mary in the Belgian Congo. In the article in the 1954 yearbook of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ, it states that she is a member of the Gospel Worker Society and will be supported by the Union Gospel Press. Bertha was not in the Congo for long. Her sister died in July of 1957 and Bertha found life and work difficult without her sister. In 1958 Bertha went to South Africa for some needed surgery. On 27 July 1959 Bertha returned to the United States, staying with her brother in Sunbury for a time. In 1960, due to severe unrest in the Congo, all foreigners were advised to leave, so she would have had to leave anyway. Bertha eventually went to live with her brother C. Leslie Miller in California. Bertha died on 12 July 1971 in Glendale, Ca. I don’t know where she is buried. Below is a photo of Bertha with her sister Mary. Bertha is on the right.
