Bertha Snyder, GW #22
Alberta “Bertha” Snyder was born 5 March 1878 in Blandon, Pa. to Mahlon Snyder and his second wife Rebecca, nee Miller. Bertha was licensed as an evangelist in 1896. According to her obituary, she had worked 22 years as a home missionary in the Gospel Worker Society. In the 1900 census she is listed in Williamsport, Pa. as a missionary along with five other Gospel Workers. Confirmation for her place of residence up to 1929 has not been found. In 1929 she married widower George H. Koehler, a lumber inspector of Canton, Ohio. By this time, Bertha was 51 year old and George was 16 years her senior. Bertha’s occupation on the marriage license application is “prac. Nursing.” They were married in Allentown by an Alderman. Apparently, they returned to Ohio to make their home in Beach City, Stark County, Ohio, about an hour’s drive South of Cleveland. In 1940, they were living in Wilmot, the next town over from Beach City. Bertha enjoyed 22 years of marriage at the time of George’s death in 1951. He is buried in Ohio next to his first wife. Bertha then moved back to Pennsylvania to live with her sister Sallie and her husband Wallace Johnson in Bethlehem. Bertha died on 7 October 1955 and is buried in Maiden Creek cemetery in Blandon, Pa.
