Cora B. Stametz, GW #50
Cora was born in Warren County, New Jersey on 25 August 1885 to Edward and Ann (Price) Stametz. Warren County is across the Delaware River from Easton, Pennsylvania. This family moved around a lot but never far. Two of her brothers were living in Easton in 1930. One of her brothers was living in Norristown, Pa. for many years. The Stametz family experienced a tragedy when Mrs. Stametz died in 1889; Cora was only four years old. In the 1895 New Jersey state census the Stametz family is living in Pohatcong, in Warren County, NJ. Cora is living with her father and her siblings that are still at home. By 1900, Cora is almost 15 years old at the time of the census and is living with her brother-in-law, William Smith, and his mother. Her sister Anna Mary that had married William Smith had died two years before. Below is a photograph of Cora from the 25 December 1903 Gospel Worker Society Herald, page 13 which reports that Cora entered the Gospel Worker Society in Easton, Pa. and is stationed at Sunbury, Pa. Apparently, she did not stay with the Gospel Workers for long; in the 1905 New Jersey state census Cora Stamets, age 19, is living with the widow Ellan Stiles and her two children in Warren County, NJ. Cora and the two children are teenagers, working in a textile factory. The girls are silk “spiners” and the boy is a silk winder. After this Cora drops off the face of the earth. There are several Cora Steinmetzes and Cora Stametzes but the details do not fit. Her brother Alfred was the only sibling for whom an obituary was found. Several brothers survived him but there was no mention of sisters. Presumably, the sisters had all passed away before his death in 1952.
