Crete Marie Howell, GW #111 

Crete was born on 22 July 1895 in Pittsburgh to Philip and Persis (Warner) Howell.  Crete is the sister of Sarah “Sadie” Howell who also became a Gospel Worker.  According to the book, The Descendants of Andrew Warner, it is reported that Crete became a missionary on 5 March 1912.  In the 1920 census she is found in Cleveland, Ohio, with other Gospel Workers.  By 1930 she had left the Gospel Workers and returned home to her widowed mother and other family members.  However, she had a gained a marketable skill while with the Gospel Worker Society; she was working as a linotypist for a printer.  At some point she met and married immigrant from England Will Baxter.  Will was divorced with one son.  The marriage was short lived; Will died on 26 May 1936.  He is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Allegheny County, Pa.  By 1940, Crete is back home with her widowed mother, this time without the other family members.  Crete’s education ended with one year of high  school; she was working as a linotype operator for a printing company.  In 1943 she married widower with children Emory Joel Breniman, a WWI veteran.  This marriage was also short lived as Emory died in 1951.  He is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery with the Howell family.  Crete may have lived the rest of her life in the Pittsburgh area; she died on 18 December 1990 in Pittsburgh.  She is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery with her family and her second husband.
