Edith E. Hughes, GW #143
Edith was born 13 October 1901 in Houtzdale, Clearfield County, Pa. to Henry and Edith (James) Hughes, both of whom were immigrants. By 1915 the Hughes family had moved to Cleveland, Ohio where the youngest two children in their family were born. By 1920 Edith had joined the Gospel Worker Society. She appears in the 1920 census with the group in Cleveland, Ohio. Edith did not stay with the Gospel Workers. In the 1940 census she is listed with her husband, H. A. Becker, 28 years older than Edith. Edith reports her age at marriage to be 31 which means she married in about 1932. She also reported that she did not have any children born to her. These questions are not normally in the 1940 census, but this census report was a “preliminary population schedule.” In the 1950 census Edith is living with her mother in Cleveland, Ohio. Both are listed as widows. By 1989 when Edith’s sister Margaret died, Edith was living in Arizona near her other two sisters, Gladys and Lillian. Edith died 28 January 1993 in Phoenix, Arizona and is buried at Hansens Desert Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary in Scottsdale, Arizona.
