Hettie May Rothermal, GW #83
Hettie May was born 29 April 1889 to Harrison M. and Bregitta (Mengel) Rothermal of Blandon, Berks County, Pa. She was baptized as an infant at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hamburg, Berks County, Pa. In 1900, the family is listed in the census as living in Maiden Creek which is the Blandon area. Hettie May was only eleven and her sister Cora who was a Gospel Worker for a brief time was nine years old. By 1910, Hettie’s and Cora’s mother had passed away and their father remarried. Hettie (listed as Mary in the 1910 census) and Cora are boarders in the home of William Gamler of Reading, along with Sarah Sterling who also became a Gospel Worker. The three young ladies worked in a hosiery mill along with their landlord’s daughter. By 1920 Hettie May had joined the Gospel Workers and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In the 1920 city directory for Cleveland she is listed as a compositor, which means she arranged type for printing. Hettie died on 6 March 1988 at the age of 98 and is buried in the Brooklyn Heights cemetery with other Gospel Workers.
