Leah C. Horne, GW #103
Leah was born on 23 October 1891 in Excelsior, PA to Alan Britton and Carrie (Campbell) Horne. Sadly, her father died in 1894, leaving a widow and two very young children. Her mother married again in 1897 to George McElreth and had eight more children. In the 1900 census, Leah and her brother are listed with the McElreth name along with the rest of the family in Shamokin, PA. In 1910 the family is still living in Shamokin where her step-father is working as a brakeman for the railroad and Leah is working as a winder at a throwing plant. By 1913 Leah has joined the Gospel Workers. She is listed in the Cleveland city directory with the address of 76 Public Square, the address of the Gospel Worker Society. In the 1916 Pittsburgh city directory Leah is listed as a Gospel Worker. Her whereabouts in 1920 remain undiscovered. By 1930 she has joined two other former Gospel Workers Elizabeth Schweisfurth and Mamie Fox in Chicago where they are listed as “missionaries.” She is in the group photo of Annie Spellman’s group, taken around 1930. In 1950 she is living in New York City with her widowed mother, no occupation listed. She was still living in 1972; she is listed as surviving her brother Donald. Her death date remains undiscovered.
