Lula was born on 5 May 1881 in Frederick, Maryland, to Milton and Sarah (Hahn) Werking. At some point, the family moved to York, Pennsylvania. In the 1902, 04, and 05 York city directories, Lula is listed as a “topper,” and living with her siblings. It was around this time that the Gospel Workers had a mission in York, Pa. By 1910, Lula is in Cleveland, Ohio with the main group of Gospel Workers, as reported in the Federal census. In 1917 and 1920 Lula is listed the Cleveland, Ohio, city directories. After that, she does not appear in the Federal Census. However, she appears in Pittsburgh, Pa. in the 1931 city directory. In obituaries of her family members, she is reported to be in Pittsburgh in 1953 (mother’s obituary), 1956 (brother Nimrod’s obituary), and 1959 (sister Dessie’s obituary). In 1960 when her brother William died, she is reported to be Cleveland, Ohio. It appears she stayed in Cleveland until the time of her death on 15 April 1972. She is buried in Brooklyn Heights Cemetery in Cleveland, Mapleside section, along with other Gospel Workers.
