Pearl E Fowler, GW #206
Pearl was born on 8 May 1918 in Minnesota to Elizabeth (Regier) Fowler. Her father is probably Fred W Fowler who married Elizabeth A Regier in Hennepin, MN on 25 April 1917. In 1920, little 1 ½ year old Pearl was living in Zion, IL with her mother, Elizabeth Fowler, and grandmother, Maria Regier, a Russian immigrant. When Pearl was very young, she was stricken with polio. I did not find out what happened to her parents, but by 1930 eleven-year-old Pearl is living in Holbrook, MA with an elderly couple whom it seems were not related to her. From her own testimony in a Gospel Worker publication Pearl shares that when she was seven years old, she was deprived of parental care but was taken in by a Christian family who “taught her about the Lord and took her to the house of God.” She did well in school and her summers were spent with having surgery to correct the effects of polio. By 1940 Pearl, now 21, is still living Holbrook but as a boarder in the home of Seldon Nickerson, his wife and five children, another boarder, and two cousins. From the 1940 census it is learned that Pearl had four years of high school as her formal education. In her testimony Pearl shares that she learned of the Gospel Workers from the publication “Young People’s Delight.” She learned of a need for more workers and joined the Society on 7 July 1942. She worked in the Editorial Department for many years then transferred to the general office. Pearl died on 24 May 1963 at the age of 45 and is buried in the Brooklyn Heights cemetery with other Gospel Workers.
