Rosa J. Rote, GW #7
Rosa was born in September 1876 in Indiana to Samuel and Mary Jane (Madison) Rote. Her sister Dora also served as a Gospel Worker. In 1880 the family was in Loudon, Illinois. A look at the children’s birth places reveals the family moved around a lot during those years. Sadly, Rosa’s mother died in 1884 when Rosa was just a child. By 1889 the family had moved to Pennsylvania, Samuel’s birth place, and settled in Reading, Pa. Rosa came to faith at some point, perhaps through the influence of her sister Dora. She followed in Dora’s footsteps and joined the Gospel Worker Society. In 1900 Rosa was in Williamsport with other Gospel Workers. Rosa is credited with starting the work in York, Pa. in 1901. In 1910 she was in Cleveland, Ohio where in the 1911 Cleveland city directory she is listed as “Matron.” By 1920 she had moved to Altoona with other Gospel Workers and did city missions there. In November of 1924 she was scratched by a cat. An infection developed and went into blood poisoning. She died a month later on 6 December 1924. The write up in the Altoona newspaper says she was the Superintendant of the mission work in Altoona for ten years and that she was an excellent singer. She is buried in the Brooklyn Heights cemetery in Cleveland with other Gospel Workers. The above article was published on 5 October 1908 by the York Daily.
