Friday Morning, March 4th.
The Fifteenth Annual Conference of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ of the Pennsylvania District convened in Ebenezer Church, Laurel Street Bethlehem, at 8:30 A.M., March 4, 1898.
The first session was opened by singing and a season of earnest prayer for the blessing of God and the guidance of the Holy Ghost during this Conference session, followed by a very stirring and practical address on Ephesians 3 by the Chairman, W. B. Musselman.

The proceedings of the last Annual Conference were read and received.
RESOLVED, That the Secretary appoint his assistants. He appointed W. G. Gehman as Assistant Secretary; T. J. Knauss, Statistical Secretary, and H. B. Musselman, Financial Secretary.
R. D. Dreisbach was appointed Reporter by the Chairman.
RESOLVED, That Parliamentary practice shall be adhered to as far as possible.
The Conference bar shall occupy the first three pews on both sides.

Committee on Examination of Quarterly Conference Records:
We have examined the minutes of the different Quarterly Conferences and found them all correct, except in the records of Upper Milford,. Northampton and Weissport, no initials of officers are given. Erwinna. on page 77, is incomplete.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Allentown – Brother Levi Moyer is recommended to the Annual Conference for the ministry.
Weissport.- Brothers G. A. Wentz and R. L. Woodring are recommended to the Annual Conference for the ministry.
Bethlehem.- Brothers J.G. Shireman and W. J. Fretz are recommended to the Conference for the ministry.
APPEALS
Norristown – This class makes an appeal to the Annual Conference to decide whether Conference Evangelists are accountable to the Quarterly Conference.
Terre Hill.–This class kindly asks the Annual Conference to decide the proper time for the pastor to vacate the parsonage after the Annual Conference. The committee recommends the Quarterly Conference Secretaries to define the resolutions more clearly. Committee:

The rest of the oral reports of the pastors were then heard. These reports were very encouraging and inspiring.
Brother W. B. Musselman, President of the Gospel Workers’ Society. gave a general report of the work of the Society throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Brother S. C. Crutcher, of the World’s Faith Missionary Association, and Brother J. W. Boyer, of the U. Evangelical Church; also our local preachers, probationers, evangelists and missionaries shall be admitted as advisory members of this body.
RESOLVED, That the Secretary explain the schedules for ministers.
The following applicants for the ministry expressed the nature of their call:

They were referred to the Committee on Applicants for the Ministry.

THIRD SESSION.

SCHEDULE.
Some points on the schedule were discussed and
RESOLVED, That whenever the Boundary Committee transfers one class from one circuit to the other the number of members in that class transferred shall be reported “transferred” on the schedule by pastor of that field, and the pastor on the field to which they are added shall report them as “received by letter of recommendation.”
The schedule was explained and question 58, having been referred to a committee consisting of C. H. Brunner, W.G. Gehman and William Gehman, was decided to include all general collections with the exception of tent rents and Presiding Elder’s collection.
WHEREAS, W. B. Musselman. President of the Gospel Workers’ Society gave a clear and definite report of the past operations of the Society in every department (spiritual, statistical and financial) to the complete satisfaction of the Conference; therefore
RESOLVED, That we recognize their work as organized and carried on under the inspiration and direction of the Holy Ghost and pledge ourselves to pray for them and use our influence for the promotion of their work; and further
RESOLVED, That according to the resolution of last year the monthly collection for them in each class shall be continued and increased as much as possible.
WHEREAS, We greatly appreciate the energetic and devoted labors of Brother W. B. Musselman in connection with Home Missionary work; therefore
RESOLVED, That we recognize the President of the Gospel Workers’ Society as Missionary Presiding Elder ex-officio;
RESOLVED, That at each camp meeting in our Conference one day, appointed by the Presiding Elder, shall be offered to the Gospel Workers, in full charge of the President or district leaders.

Committee on Ordination:

RESOLVED, That it shall be permissible to hold the Quarterly Conference sessions in private (i. e., only members of our Church being present), according to the decision of the Presiding Elder and minister in charge.
RESOLVED, That the Annual Conference licensed evangelists and local preachers shall be held accountable to the respective Quarterly Conferences of which they are members.
RESOLVED, That after the Conference the new preacher shall have a right to the parsonage.

The report of the Secretary of the Foreign Missionary Board was read and received; also a very interesting letter from Brother H. L. Weiss, of Chile, South America. (See report.)
RESOLVED, That the Presiding Elder shall see that the large tabernacle be remodeled by putting on a new cover. The necessary money shall be raised by collections from the various circuits as before.
The report of the Treasurer of the Poor Fund was read and received. (See report.)
RESOLVED, That the Gospel Workers shall be invited to bring their book tent to our camp meetings.
RESOLVED, That the Chair appoint a committee to formulate a resolution concerning the work of the Presiding Elder in the future. G. A. Campbell, L. B. Taylor, W. Steinmetz, A. M. Clauser and J. E. Fidler were appointed.

At this point the Chairman announced that the time for the election of Presiding Elder had come.
By order of Conference he appointed T. J. Knauss; A. Strawn and William Gehman as tellers.
C. H. Brunner was elected Presiding Elder, whereupon he gave a very impressive address, stating his inability, in himself, to fill this position and asking the effectual, fervent prayer of the Conference.
RESOLVED, That the late Presiding Elder shall retain the chair and the Secretary his desk until the close of this session. The Missionary Presiding Elder shall also be a member of the Stationing Committee.
The following officers were also elected: Chairman of the next Annual Conference, C. H. Brunner, P. E., Vice Presiding Elder, J. E. Fidler; Missionary, Vice Presiding Elder H. B. The resolutions of the work of the Presiding Elder having been laid on the table were now considered and received, with corrections, as follows:
(a) We recommend that the ordinance meetings shall be as last year, except on missions or places where there is no ordained minister. The Presiding Elder shall he responsible for said services.
(b) He shall have the privilege of holding one or more camp meetings as he deems advisable.
(c) He shall have the privilege to use our young men and married couples who come out as workers in tabernacles, halls, etc., as he sees fit. Committee:

RESOLVED, That any single sister who feels a call to the work shall either work under the direction of the Quarterly Conference, and be accountable to the same, or join the Gospel Workers’ Society.
RESOLVED, That the Missionary Presiding Elder shall transfer any young men, except local workers, who come out among the Gospel Workers to the Church and the Presiding Elder.

FIFTH SESSION (EXTRA)

RESOLVED, That any who wish to work among the Gospel Workers shall come
recommended by their respective Quarterly Conferences, or the Presiding Elder, and vice\versa.
RESOLVED, That Brother W. K. Ziegler: shall be ordained tomorrow afternoon. The Presiding Elder shall preach the Conference sermon in the morning and the Missionary Presiding Elder the Ordination sermon in the afternoon.
Brother Readen Tettermer’s request to be excused was granted by the Conference.

SIXTH SESSION.
Monday Morning, March 7th.
This session was opened by prayer by A. A. Wismer, followed by the reading of the minutes of the last two sessions, which were received with corrections.
The Committee appointed to devise means to liquidate the Annual Conference share of the Reading Church debt reported as follows:
RESOLVED, That the Presiding Elder shall travel through the Annual Conference district and take subscriptions for the amount needed, viz.: $946.07, plus interest, from February 1898, payable at the third round of the Quarterly Conferences. No money shall be paid and no subscriptions declared valid until the whole amount is pledged. Committee:

After the matter was presented before the Conference the Holy Spirit opened the hearts of those present and $351 was subscribed.
RESOLVED, That whenever the Gospel Workers turn one or more of their missions over to the Church a committee, consisting of the Presiding Elder, the Missionary Presiding Elder and the Treasurer, shall appraise the personal property belonging to the mission, and, in case the Church chooses to buy the same, it shall be paid for out of the Home Missionary treasury.
WHEREAS, We have made no provision for the support of the Missionary Presiding Elder; therefore
RESOLVED, That we recommend each minister in charge to hold a Love Feast
service in the middle of each quarter and lift an offering towards the support of the Missionary Presiding Elder.

RESOLVED, that we will have two Sunday-School Conventions this year. One English, including Norristown, Gratersford, Royersford, Spring City, Quakertown, Hatfield, Reading and Terre Hill; and one English and German, consisting of all the other Sunday Schools.
Each Sunday-School shall be represented by the Superintendent and one delegate.

Brother Andreas Kramer, a native of Germany, who was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost a few years ago, gave a history of his conversion and call as a missionary to his native country, and desired a recommendation from this Conference, with authority as missionary, to baptize, Etc.; therefore
RESOLVED, That as soon as he is ready to leave he shall appear before the Foreign Missionary Board for further advice. Committee:

RESOLVED, That alternate delegates be elected to the Annual Conference.
The Presiding Elder shall see that the tabernacle workers take proper care of the tabernacles.
RESOLVED, That the expenses of any committee of investigation, appointed by the Presiding Elder, shall be presented to the Annual Conference and paid by the other ministers.
RESOLVED, That the next Annual Conference convene at Upper Milford on the first Friday in March, 1899.
RESOLVED, That we tender a rising vote of thanks to the brothers and sisters and friends of Bethlehem for their kindness and hospitality shown us during the session of this Conference.
